Everybody and their mother has heard of this show but maybe i just watch too much of drew gooden. Also the title isn’t much to my liking, because putting a curse word as the show title forces it to strive for mediocrity. It resembles The End of the Fucking world where the show itself is pretty good and entertaining to watch, yet it isn’t very groundbreaking. It became a victim of its own genre similar to i don’t like this. The title is so mediocre that despite having a decent aesthetic no one actually cares. But that’s just my opinion on a title.
Now for the plot. To keep the summary short and without any spoilers I will start with the main feature of the show. It is a story of a married couple, where husband, after whom the show was named, Kevin McRoberts lives in his perfect setting of a cheerful sitcom and the scenes he partakes in have the according directing style. While his wife Allison sees their marriage as a drama. Therefore anytime she is alone in a room the lights are dim, the music is intense and the frames are strained to keep you on edge. I see it often in modern media, that contemporary artists can’t express something new and fresh just through the means of plot, so they have to go a bit meta. And though I see it as the last resort to grab viewers attention it is still very entertaining.
As the plot develops Allison is trying to figure out what to do with her marriage, coming up with various extreme schemes and plots against her husband. But in the end it turns out to be a celebration of female friendship and loyalty in which women comfort each other through hard times.
The characters are really great. Kevin played by Eric Petersen is such an annoying motherfucker. And honestly, when I see actors of this type only play similar roles (even though I haven’t seen him in anything else, so it’s just my off-topic thoughts) you can’t help but wonder if they are like this in real life as well and aren’t acting at all. I was trying to find interviews with him to see what kind of person he is, but failed. But I wasn’t looking too hard so whatever.
As for the main duo - Allison and Patty, they have such great chemistry between them. They are so different yet they bounce off of each other in a very interesting two-way contrast. Allison who is portrayed as a goody two shoes actually tends to take risks and be reckless for the sake of her goal. While Patty is introduced as a character who isn't new to the criminal world and also we see that she struggles with attachment. But both of these things lose their relevance because Patty is thrown off her feet by Allison’s out of character behaviour that she proceeds to act as unpredictable.
To me this feels like another way to play around the sitcom concept. In sitcoms characters are prisoners of their own cliches. And in Kevin can fuck himself they break them and turn to ambivalence. The writing in this feels so human. I personally find it fascinating when a character acts slightly out of character. It makes it so much more believable. In real life people also tend to do stuff you wouldn’t expect them to.
Overall - great show. At times a little boring, but that’s just a problem of my attention span.
